This is Chris Redgrave for Zions Bank Speaking on Business.

The private sector plays a critical role in helping solve community, business and social issues. Private companies like Zane Prep in Park City are helping us, as a society, work on our education challenges by creating a supplemental education program that addresses math issues for kindergarten through 8th grade students.

The drive for founder and chairman Paul Zane Pilzer is to ensure his kids’ quality of education first followed closely by everyone else’s kids. This educational veteran of over 20 years, with an impressive resume as a professor at NYU and, to date, the youngest Wharton MBA recipient, was motivated to do something in watching his four elementary-age children struggle individually with their math problems.

That’s when he realized we needed a supportive supplemental program that would assess the student, design an individual plan and evaluate after every session. It’s also transparent and creates a supportive group on behalf of parents. One of the keys to the program is to take a customized approach, based on a child’s knowledge and produce a curriculum specifically for that child.

Math is the basis of everything. You’ll hear Paul say that if you understand math, you’ll have a good understanding of life. Zane Prep takes around 60 concepts and breaks them down into 12 different levels. Each child takes an assessment to determine what they already understand and which concepts they’re struggling with.

Paul determined at this age, peer-based instruction is the most effective approach. So, Zane Prep students are broken into classes of five with a single teacher. As they go through the class, they help each other learn, and by the time five weeks are over, they’ve bonded and want to take the next class together. And as for the teachers…many of them are high-school and college age honor students who jump at the chance to teach these kids.

Paul is working on scaling the Zane Prep model right now to take it to schools around the nation. Check out the video version of Zane Prep, available today, on the ZionsDirect YouTube channel.
